The Little Things

When most people think about wedding photography, their minds go straight to the big moments: the walk down the aisle, the first kiss, the dance floor confetti. And while those are absolutely essential, there’s a quieter side to your wedding story that deserves just as much love—the details.

Detail photos are the beautifully composed shots of the things you spent months dreaming about, planning, and choosing with care: your invitation suite, your jewelry, your shoes, your bouquet, and all the little things that make your day yours.

As a wedding photographer, I can promise you this: when you look back at your gallery in 20 years, you’ll be surprised by how much the little things bring the memories flooding back.

The Importance

  • They set the scene. Before the ceremony begins and before anyone walks down the aisle, detail photos help tell the full story of your day. They capture the atmosphere and aesthetic that you worked so hard to curate.
  • They honor your effort. You spent hours choosing fonts, picking florals, and finding the perfect pair of heels—these photos preserve that intentionality.
  • They’re storytelling gold. From a storytelling perspective, details fill in the visual gaps between the big emotional moments, creating a richer, more complete wedding gallery.
  • They personalize your album. Your grandmother’s handkerchief, your custom wax seal, or your engraved wedding band—these tiny treasures deserve to be remembered just as much as the first kiss.

What to Include

Here’s a helpful checklist of items you may want to gather and have ready for your photographer on the morning of your wedding:

For the Bride:

  • Dress (on a nice hanger if possible)
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry (earrings, bracelet, necklace)
  • Perfume
  • Veil or hairpieces
  • Invitation suite (2 full copies if you can!)
  • Rings (all 3 if possible)
  • Vow book or letter from your partner
  • Any family heirlooms (handkerchief, locket, etc.)
  • Florals (ask your florist for a few loose stems!)
  • Wedding day clutch or accessories

For the Groom:

  • Tie or bowtie
  • Cufflinks
  • Watch
  • Shoes
  • Socks (especially if they’re custom or themed)
  • Boutonnière
  • Vow book or letter
  • Cologne
  • Personalized details (engraved flask, monogrammed handkerchief, etc.)

Bonus Details:

  • Custom signage or wax seals
  • Ring box or dish
  • Programs or menus
  • Any other keepsake items that reflect your theme or story

How to Prep

The best way to make sure these moments are captured stress-free? Have everything ready in one place before your photographer arrives. Use a small box or tote to gather all the items you’d like photographed. Let your florist know to deliver any loose florals early.

This gives your photographer the chance to start documenting while you’re getting ready, and ensures nothing gets missed during the busy, beautiful chaos of the wedding morning.

Bonus tip: If there’s something especially sentimental (like a letter, heirloom, or photo), let your photographer know ahead of time so they can give it the attention it deserves.
